First of all, have a think about what you wish to see in your painting. What event is it to celebrate and who will be included? Where is it set? There's no need to get too concrete an image at thisstage, but it is very useful to have a few good ideas. I like to work with the ideas that you have. At our first meeting, we'll discuss your ideas and viewsand start the creative process going. You may have some very fixed concepts about the contentof the picture, or you may just have a few loose notions, but know roughly what you're after.Following our first meeting, I'll produce some preliminary sketches, and working together, we'llrefine these into the concept for the final picture. You can also see the work in progress, via the net or in the studio, so changes can be made before the picture is finished. I can produce the highest quality of work, from the smallest pencil drawing to the largest mural. My work is priced by the square inch (or centimetre, if you prefer). This is much fairer than chargingon a whim, or by the hour, as you will know the end cost of the work, before you've contacted me! The price of the painting usually includes all materials, initial research time, and local travel. Additional costs are fully explained below. Just follow the link to the relevant item. So, just think of what you want, have an look at the prices, and then click on the "WRITE" button(top left) for ways to contact me. I'm looking forward to meeting you. |

Watercolour and watercolour/bodycolour/gouache works are shown below. Please note the difference between "tight" and "loose" finishes in the styles of work. Please seethe examples below. Tight finish denotes works which are very detailed, and which take time to execute, and normally involve a fair amount of research.Loose finish denotes works executed in a flowing wash and line style, which takes much less time, and far less painstaking attention to detail, though just as much care. Watercolours are normally executed on a good weight Acid free Not paper, and are supplied mounted on board. See FRAMING for more information. |

Oil paintings are supplied unvarnished, as the paint must dry thoroughly (1-2 years) before any permanent varnish is applied to the surface. Please note the difference between "tight" and "loose" finishes in the styles of work, see the examples below. Tight finish denotes works which are very detailed, and which take time to execute, and normally involve a fair amount of research.Loose finish denotes works executed in a more impressionistic style, which takes much less time and far less painstaking attention to detail, though just as much care in composition. Research costs are not normally charged, as a certain amount of sketching and exploratory work, examining photographs, etc, are all part of the service. Most clients will have plenty of photographic, and other material which can be used directly in creating the work. This amounts to a day's researchon location. Usually, I can do quite a lot of work with a little research!Time spent on far more detailed investigation and significant revisions - big changes of mind by theclient - to the final image has to be charged for.Research is additionally charged at £20 per hour, if: The final work will be of small value, compared with the amount of time spent on research ie., a detailed A5 drawing of an historic incident, where the client provides no material. There is preliminary work not directly connected to the final imagery. As a general guide, if a significant change is made in the direction of the final work (either by new material coming to light or the client changes their mind resulting in a re-working or re-start of thefinal work) time has to be charged. In practice, with good consultation and communication, the need for this rarely arises. Travel and additional Costs: If there is a need for extra travel, subsistence and additional expenses beyond the normal amount necessary, this is charged just on a cost only basis. |

Framing is a personal choice, and depends mainly on two factors: the style of the work, and whereit is intended to hang. I don't frame works myself, but I can arrange for them to be framed at cost, and I can assist in helping to chose the style of frame used. If you already have an old, or antique frame that you'd like to use, and want a special canvas to fit, this is no problem. Canvases can be made to fit any frame. Here are some general guidelines for framing which you might like to consider: Pencil, pastel & watercolour. Works in these media are always framed behind glass, to protect the surface. Generally these works are smaller than canvas supported works, and being generally works on paper, are mounted on a backing card, framed by a "mount" orsurround, and finally put into a glass-fronted frame, with a hardboard backing piece.Oils & Acrylic. These are more robust, and generally fit into wooden moulding frames made to fit. The canvas is then sometimes protected at the back by a covering of strong brown paper. Works in a more modern style, especially on board, are sometimes not framed at all. Please ask if you have any questions about frames. |

I'll normally deliver the finished work myself to you. The only exception to this is where overseastravel and distance make this impractical. At such times, the works will be carefully crated and insured, and sent by a reputable carrier.Frames with glass. Even the best carriers will shy away from carrying glass frames, so for any work which has to travel by a carrier, the work must travel unframed and framing arranged locally.Delivery charges: By carrier, all charges at cost, including packing. I'll personally deliver my work free of charge within 50 miles of Exmouth. Additional mileage charged at cost only. |
