18th century. A frigate passes too far to leeward of a ship to chase. Friend or foe? I painted this mainly to try the pale reflected light on the sails from the cloudabove. (Just a theory). The Sunset on the horizon is worked in gouache, asare the sails.Collection of Mr. G Tinsley
